These have been split into <strong>intra-urban</strong> (red on the map below) walking and cycling routes (typically these are routes completely within a town) and<strong>&nbsp;inter-urban</strong> (blue on the map below) cycling routes (typically these are routes connecting two or more settlements).</p><p><br></p><p>Preferred routes have been identified, along which improvements (interventions) can be made for cycling and/or walking/wheeling. It is important to note that there are no proposed schemes with funding at this stage, but potential schemes can be pursued if funding becomes available.&nbsp;</p><p><br></p>

Wheeling means those using wheelchairs and other wheeled mobility aids.&nbsp;</p><p><strong>An LCWIP aims to create:</strong></p><ul><li>A network plan of high priority walking and cycling routes</li><li>A prioritised list of projects to improve walking and cycling infrastructure</li><li>Reports which summarise the analysis that has been undertaken to identify the priority walking and cycling routes and how potential improvements have been identified</li></ul><p>An LCWIP is important to help residents to become more active by walking and cycling.</p><h2><strong>What are the routes, and how are they selected?</strong></h2><p>Potential walking and cycling routes across the South Hams and West Devon have been identified through a complex modelling process.</p><p>The LCWIP can only include existing roads and cycle paths, and cannot assess or suggest cycle paths that pass over private land.&nbsp;</p><p>The identified routes have been split into two types:</p><ul><li>Routes completely within a single town - known an an <strong>intra-urban route</strong></li><li>A route connecting two or more communities - known as an <strong>inter-urban route</strong></li></ul><p>As well as identifying routes, the modelling process has also identified further possible improvements for cycling, walking, and &quot;wheeling&quot; in the South West Devon area.</p><p>There are <strong>no proposed schemes with funding</strong> at this stage. However, these schemes could be pursued if funding becomes available.</p><p>There may be many more routes outside of the LCWIP that are also important to residents, but the project currently focuses on those routes shown to have the greatest number of people who would use them.</p><p><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/commonplace-digital-limited/image/upload/v1710843653/projects/65f95c4b0536ab55677cc1f0/ms6p9jxm2dganronxifr.jpg" class="fr-fic fr-dib"></p><h2><strong>What are the barriers to people walking and cycling?</strong></h2><ul><li>Heavily trafficked main roads, with limited provision for active travel, and limited crossing points</li><li>Dangerous junctions for walking and cycling</li><li>One-way streets and other features in our communities that make it difficult to make short journeys by bicycle</li><li>Features of the natural landscape - such as steep hills and rivers</li><li>Poor surfaces and drainage on existing routes</li><li>Existing roads and routes being too narrow</li><li>Barriers such as chicane barriers or &#39;A frames&#39;</li><li>Obstacles like vehicles parked on pavements</li></ul><h2><strong>What is being done to reduce or remove these barriers to cycling and walking?</strong></h2><p>Each route on the LCWIP has been analysed to identify what barriers may stop people walking or cycling - and solutions have been suggested in the plan to overcome these barriers and provide an &#39;appropriate level of service&#39; to enable more people to walk, wheel or cycle along each route.</p><p>Where appropriate, interventions align with the Department for Transport&rsquo;s Local Transport Note 1/20 Cycle Infrastructure Design and other national guidance.&nbsp;</p><h2><strong>What happens after the public consultation?</strong></h2><p>After the consultation ends, we will produce a Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan, which will form the basis for long-term investment in walking and cycling in the South Hams and West Devon.</p><p>When funding is secured for design and delivery of some quicker wins and early projects, your comments will feed into the early stages of design development, so that those designs address local problems and provide adequate solutions to help more people to walk and cycle more often.</p>
